Honeymoon Package

What is the diabetes honeymoon phase?
After the T1 diabetes diagnosis, many patients enter a period when their symptoms get better. This is called the “honeymoon phase.”
The honeymoon phase usually begins about 3 months after starting treatment for T1 diabetes. The length of the honeymoon is different for each person; it may last weeks, months or even years.
This temporarily remission can be confusing and difficult to manage: you are trying to find out how to balance you glucose levels with insulin injections, but your own pancreas still produces some insulin as well. This contributes to unstable and unpredictable blood sugar levels. Therefore you may need to adjust the amount of base (background) insulin and bolus (fast-acting, mealtime) insulin you use more often than after the honeymoon phase.

The Honeymoon Package is designed to get you through this phase with an optimal understanding of how your glucose levels are affected by food, exercise and insulin use. Special attention is given to changes in the stability of your average blood sugar and the amount of insulin needed to keep you within the target range.

The Honeymoon Package consists of:
• Three monthly reports: the 2nd, 4th and 6th month after diabetes diagnosis
• Each report explains how food, exercise and insulin have affected your blood sugar in the past month
• After each report there is a complimentary 30 minute one-on-one online discussion about the latest results. You will have the opportunity to mention other factors that you may have noticed to affect your glucose control, like stress, hormonal changes etc. so they can be taken into account in subsequent analyses
• After 6 months, the three reports are combined into a trend analysis on how your insulin needs have developed over time
